  • Mauritius

Mauritius can quite rightly consider itself a ‘paradise island’. It is the destination for many tourists throughout the year. Mauritius is currently looking to try and diversify its economic base even more. This includes the idea of developing Mauritius as an ‘education hub’ for the region, which would also provide educational opportunities for students outside of the island. It has a diverse cultural and religious background that is reflected in the school community at Le Bocage International School.

SCHOOL SITE AND FACILITIES

LBIS is located on the slopes of Mount Ory, very central and just off the motorway between Plaines Wilhems and the capital, Port Louis.  From there it commands a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and plains leading down to the Indian Ocean.  There are more than forty teaching rooms including four fully equipped science laboratories, three computer rooms, two art studios, a three Design & Technology rooms, a home economics laboratory and a large purpose-built library. 2015 saw the completion of a new Performing Arts and Language Lab Block, housing a state of the art Language Lab, music room, theatre and recording studio. There are playing fields, housing four football fields, and outdoor hard court surfaces. The multi-purpose sports hall houses multiple badminton, table-tennis and basketball courts. It also functions as an auditorium for the many special events held each year.  The school also has a small canteen and dining facility.

Students are enrolled in Forms 1-7 (UK, years 7-13, US grades 6-12), with the student body comprised of approximately thirty different nationalities.  85% of the student body is Mauritian, many of whom have lived overseas.  Students come from a wide variety of social and cultural backgrounds.  Most are bilingual.  The student-teacher ratio stands at 9:1 and the maximum class size is under 25 students, with the average class size being approximately 20.  Not only does small class size ensure that each student receives more personal attention but that the teaching faculty can more closely monitor progress.

TEACHING STAFF AND POSTS OF RESPONSIBILITY

LBIS employs sixty-four qualified teachers.  Many of these hold postgraduate qualifications in education.  The staff at LBIS is also made up of IB Examiners, Workshop Leaders and Consultants. Specialist staff include three librarians, a careers and guidance counselor, a student learning support department of four teachers, and a nurse.  Curriculum responsibilities are shared by Heads of Department in eight key learning areas and the coordinators of the IB Middle Years, IGCSE and IB Diploma programmes of study.

LBIS tries hard to keep members of the community informed of its events and practices.  Regular communications are sent home and the website (http://www.lebocage.net) is updated with news of coming events, reports and photographs of recent events. The school also has its own Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/lebocageinternationalschool ) allowing the community to follow events at the school. LBIS has also implemented the online assessment and curriculum system, ManageBac, allowing students and parents to view progress in each subject on a live basis.

Languages

LBIS is an English medium school.  Other than in foreign language classes, English is the language of instruction.  Whilst both English and French are taught to some students as a second language, the school aims to ensure that each student studies at least one of these languages at first language and literature level. Students in Forms 1 – 3 also study Spanish. The school is also registered with the Rosetta Stone software programme, encouraging further language development and also Mother Tongue languages.
